Mind the Gap
The project for the Integral Center of Transport of Madrid is considered as an instrument, a support, almost an infrastructure, which proposes as a starting point the basic, sometimes forgotten ideas of architecture: the landscape, the road, the crossroads, The limit, the enclosure, the man.
To do this we propose a first logical action, almost using the scissors before the pencil: remove what is left over. Build a vacuum. A garden of local biotopes, therefore without maintenance. A piece of holm-oak carpet of holm oaks and kernels, juniper and asparagus, cantueso, thyme and rosemary, broom and honeysuckle, arranged naturally according to the areas of greatest solar incidence and the first and In the shaded spaces, the Last A hortus conclusus, a secret place, collected and hidden; New, but posed as if it had always been there, primordial, original. Around this garden we have a cloister that orders and hierarchizes the proposal, unifying spatially the different areas of the program.
To each of them, independent, we enter through a threshold, a transcendent and singular space, that constructs, with light and emptiness, the transition between the great central garden vacuum that is given to the city, and the interior spaces, pragmatic and useful .
The first of them constitute the main access of the avenue of Asturias, an area without roof, but so present and so true that nobody can assure that it does not exist. An invisible ceiling, the mayor than a cathedral and that lead us to the tight cloister around the dazzling emptiness. The second of these drawings includes the vestibule that gives access to the technical and administrative area, an extension of the exterior route, the volume of the pristine vacuum collects the green and vibrant reflections of the garden. The third is a new square that separates the Control Center from the Auditorium and allows access to the upper boundary of the building and exit to San Aquilino Street without interfering with any of these uses. The fourth, in front of the first, the secret threshold of the Metro Space, with entrance in a bend and zenith, prepares for the most singular space of the complex. The encounter, the exchange, the necessary relationship between the different occupants of the building, in these empty spaces, in the intermediate spaces, in the well of this project that here is not artificially stained black, but green, colored. Light and shadow An architecture that implies sustainable being.
